Every month, the Desert Druid Farm team gathers to celebrate dedication, hard work, and outstanding contributions to the farm. And every month, one employee stands out above the rest.
It’s Arthas. Again.
Staff Reactions
While the human team members insist they “also work very hard,” the committee (Stacey) maintains that Arthas’s contributions are simply too impressive to overlook.
Danny has submitted several polite appeals. All were kindly declined.
Official Recognition
For excellence in farm security, team spirit, and being the most dependable furry coworker, Arthas is proudly awarded Employee of the Month.
Again.
And honestly… probably next month too.
This month alone, Arthas bravely alerted the farm to:
• A very suspicious tumbleweed
• A butterfly flying a little too confidently
•A leaf that moved when it wasn’t windy
•His dedication to safety is unmatched.
When a rabbit dared to approach the perimeter, Arthas immediately activated his full security protocol — sprinting, boofing, and issuing several stern barks to ensure the intruder fled the premises.
Arthas provides daily encouragement by:
•Leaning on coworkers for emotional support
•Offering comforting grumbles
•Sitting proudly in the way so everyone must pet him
While we love to joke about Arthas’s “Employee of the Month” streak, his real work here is quiet, serious, and deeply important to the rhythm of our farm.
We allow the natural wildlife to move freely across our land, and in order to keep that balance honest, our DDR‑line German Shepherd walks the boundaries with us each morning. His job is to reduce predator pressure on our chickens and livestock, and to protect our bees from skunks and raccoons who would happily raid a hive.
Arthas is emotionally intelligent enough to leave the smaller wildlife alone — the quail families, the rabbits, the little creatures who belong here just as much as we do. He knows the difference between a threat and a neighbor, and that discernment is part of what makes him extraordinary.
His presence keeps the ecosystem in balance, and the farm would be much harder to run without him. Beneath all the humor, he is a working dog with a purpose, a partner in stewardship, and a guardian of the land we care for.
We’re also pretty sure the local coyote population — who do a magnificent job keeping prairie dog pressure down — have their own campfire legends about the great black shepherd who patrols the boundary lines.
A shadow on the ridge.
A silent watcher.
The one they respect from afar 😉
